As already indicated, all the buzz about meta tags is not worth focusing
on anymore. But what is indeed important is your web site's titles. They
are very relevant for both your search engine rankings and the likeliness
of people clicking on a search engine result.
Ask you favorite search engine for "Bay Area real estate listings"
and take a look at the following fictious results. Which one would you
rather click on?
7.) Real Estate Listings: Bay Area Real Estate Guide
Description...
http://www.good-real-estate-site.com/
8.) Welcome
Description...
http://www.bad-real-estate-site.com/
If you choose your title wisely in a way that it describes the content
well, you're more likely to have a higher click-through rate.
More importantly, search engines give a lot of weight to keywords if
they appear in the title, so that you can increase your search engine
ranking following these tips:
- Place important keywords first. One example: instead of "Pilgrim
Corp: Our Company produces VHF Radios", you would most likely have
a higher ranking with a title like "VHF Radios - Find a Great Selection
at Pilgrim Corp", because this way the important keywords vhf radios
appear first.
- A rule of thumb: Try have around six to ten words in your title.
- Targeting a keyword with a title only make sense if you use the
keyword throughout the text of the page.
By following the above tips, you can achieve two goals at the same time:
improve your search engine ranking by placing important keywords in the
title and improve your click-through rate by giving your pages good description.
