The topic of the mobile Web, i.e. Internet access via cell or smart phones, has recently been moving into the center of attention. According to various studies, including a recent report from Bango, mobile Internet usage in the U.S. has increased threefold since last year. That elevates the U.S. to second place behind the U.K. on the leading edge of mobile Internet usage. The number of mobile domain registrations are also a pertinent indicator: Never has there been so much activity: In May 2007 the threshold of half a million .mobi domain registrations was surpassed, according to the dotMobi consortium.
It might have been due to the introduction of more flexible smart phones as well as more competitive data access plans, one thing is certain: mobile users, cell technology as well as flat rate pricing models have helped change the stage rapidly. Web-enabled cell phones combined with unrestricted data plans have contributed to the fact that access to the Web has become all-pervasive in our daily lives.
